Capri Cork Provides Comfort Underfoot for Eileen Fisher

With the holidays approaching, we’re all bound to be spending more time perusing through the crazy world of retail—online, malls, city streets, you name it. As we walk (or click) through store after store, searching for that perfect something, we often overlook the history of the brand, the technologies involved in creating the fabrics and the sustainability of design in creating their brick and mortar spaces.

I'm sure many of you have heard of Eileen Fisher—American clothing designer and founder of the American women's clothing retailer, Eileen Fisher, Inc. Eileen Fisher clothing is known for simplicity. But the brand's long-time commitment to social consciousness is not as well known. Fisher carries this commitment from design to manufacturing, packing to shipping and interior design to energy conservation.

Consumers can look at a label to see the material content of a garment, but what makes up that material? In 2009, Fisher began working with Bluesign Technologies. Today, all silks and many other fabrics in the collection are Bluesign certified - dyed and finished using fewer chemicals, less water and less energy.

Architecture firm, Ole Sondresen, was selected to spearhead the redesign of Fisher’s existing retail space at 10 Columbus Circle in New York's Time Warner Center. Sondreson, recognized for their sustainable building and design practices, was the perfect fit to create a design to represent Fisher's passion for sustainability.

In renovating the 2,600 square foot space, Ole Sonderson selected AND/OR by Capri Cork for the flooring throughout. AND/OR, a blend of soft rubber and cork addressed two main concerns of the space—comfort underfoot for the salespeople who are on their feet all day and sound deadening to create a quiet environment within the bustling Columbus Circle mall. Contributing to the sustainability, AND/OR is made with 34.9% pre-consumer recycled content and is FloorScore® certified for indoor air quality.
