Cosmo Couture: Most Creative Award Goes to FOCUS Architecture + Design!

Last week, Cosmo Couture held their third annual event benefiting My Sister’s Place – a support center in Washington, D.C. for battered women and their children.

Cosmo Couture challenges local architecture and design firms to design and fabricate couture garments out of materials found in their material libraries – rubber, wood veneer, wall-covering, you name it.  Each firm selects one manufacturer to source the materials for their clothing design.   The selected material must make up a minimum of 85% of the final creation.  The couture garments are judged during a runway show and awards are given to design teams based on four different categories – Haute Couture, Best Performance, Most Creative and Audience Favorite.

Spartan Surfaces was proud to sponsor FOCUS Architecture + Design, one of 20 teams who participated in this year’s event.  FOCUS, based in Arlington, VA, selected Spartan’s recycled rubber line, ECOsurfaces, for their base material.  The final design featured a mix of colors from ECOsurfaces 3.2mm sheet rubber offering.  FOCUS team members spent weeks designing, tweaking and fabricating the couture dress.  The final design, shown at right, was AMAZING winning the team the award for “Most Creative” couture garment.

Want to see the designs first hand?  You’re in luck!  The Corcoran Gallery of Art is featuring the garments in an exhibit at their space on Seventeenth Street in NW Washington, D.C.   They will be on display through October 14th in Gallery 31, the Corcoran’s free dedicated exhibition space.

Thanks to event Co-Chairs Pedro Nunez and Stacey Milici, the support of IIDA and the design community Cosmo Couture donated over forty thousand dollars to the organization over the past two years.  The success of this year’s event will once again aid My Sister’s Place in providing safe and confidential emergency shelter, transitional housing, supportive programs, counseling, education and advocacy for battered women and their children.

ECOsurfaces, a part of the ECORE family of products, is manufactured locally in Lancaster, PA. The high quality, recycled rubber flooring offers architects and designers endless possibilities to create personalized designs for education, healthcare, sports and fitness, retail, hospitality, recreation, corporate and industrial applications.  All ECOsurfaces products are FloorScore certified and have the potential to contribute towards earning up to 12 points toward LEED certification.

A special thanks to FOCUS and all their amazing team members!
